Horse Archers take huge amounts of micromanaging and many people don't like that, I like Massagetae but it's not a faction I would recommend to others.I've been reading about some new players that having problems with the grand campaign.
The Steppe Tribes are missing from the guide because I simply wouldn't recommend them. As for Baktria and Macedon, great factions again but I wouldn't recommend them due to diplomacy penalties and enemies(I was close to putting Boi in the guide but decided against it due to the huge diplomatic penalties they have with other barbarians). Iceni is a great beginner faction but I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone unless they specifically say they wanted the easiest faction possible. I tried to infuse some vanilla aspects on the factions into the guide but sometimes I can't help but bring up things that have been modded in(like Carthage having archers).Īs for it being "incomplete", that's not really the right word to use. It's how I experienced the factions and people are free to check out Vanilla specific guides if they want to get a vanilla perspective. I appreciate the critisim but me basing my experience off modded rosters cannot change. Well, I do play it modded so perhaps I should put a disclaimer somewhere that this is based on modded rosters? The guide would kind of be invalidated if I based it off vanilla rosters completely. They're like the Space Marines from Warhammer, or the humans from Starcraft, or the Americans from Company of Heroes (etc.) poster boys tend to be good for newer players because they're the ones who draw new players in - they need to be able to keep new players in the game. The Romans are the tutorial faction for a reason - they're not just the poster boys, they're easy to learn the game with. Newer players might get completely turned off if they have to carefully manage pike blocks, Skirmishers and/or plain bad melee infantry due to not understanding the maths and mechanics behind the game (for example it might be confusing as well as demoralising to not understand why your low-tier barbarian infantry are getting their butts handed to them when they fight Romans). If you take a faction that relies on having good core macro at a battle line level, you're going to struggle. This leaves the player free to take a breather and start developing their skills at micro, by using cavalry to perform flanking and ambush manoeuvres, auxiliaries to explore different unit types and basically run through how the mechanics of the game work. I'd agree wholeheartedly with the above Rome is probably the best starting faction if I'm honest.Ī heavy infantry-oriented faction with strong supporting units tends to be the easiest to pick up if you're new managing battle lines is a daunting prospect for an inexperienced player, and Rome basically removes that tricky prospect due to their strong, reliable and superior heavy melee infantry.
